An entry in the Florida Humanities Council Series "Look Where We Live!", this program is entitled "Perceptions of Paradise: How Artists Have Helped Shape Florida’s Mythic Image” .
Mallory O'Connor, author and teacher, degreed in painting, American history and art history, presents this program. She is Professor of Art History Emeritus at Sante Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida. Florida, with its abundance of water in coastlines, rivers and streams, lakes and springs has been portrayed for hundreds of years as almost a mythical Eden. But what IS paradise? Professor O’Connor poses that question and asks what has shaped our image of paradise and how that vision of paradise has changed. How have artists over the past 400 years reinforced the mythic image of Florida as Eden? The slides of artistic images she presents appeal to our enduring hope that we will find that perfect Garden that we left so long ago.
